Mid-game Updates

Blue coloring on countries in the power charts indicates the eventual winners of the game.

Ten days after start, November 14, 1997

It's time for one of those game updates that we so seldom see on RGE these days. Twisted Mind I is well underway, already 6 updates into the fray. Here is a quick rundown of the setup. Each country started with a circular 19 sector island. The islands were connected to two other islands via uses plains sectors. And everybody started at tech 40 with a modest amount of civ's in each sector. The overall geographic effect is that the small islands were all interconnected on a huge hexagon. Now for the fun part.

In the middle of the huge hexagon, some 13 sectors away, is a gaint continent just barely populated with wild natives. Great mountain ranges, torrential rivers, vast plains, and huge lakes can be found here, along with over 4000 usefull sectors. Everybody soon figured out that the key to this game was to get a big chunk of the internal land. And then they have to populate it. And this brings up another problem.

It seems that some sadistic person got into the ship.c file and changed things so cargo ships and fishers can only carry 10% of the number of civ's. Heck, even the oil derricks only carry 300 civ's and ore ships and tankers can only carry 5 civ's. Then this same hacker disabled the demobilize command so military ships could not bring over a ton of mil and convert them into civ's. So huge tracks of land need to be populated and there is no easy fix. If you need a job, apply to Twisted Mind I as a boat captain. They can use you there.

Politicly and militarly, some things never change. Even though 90% of the land is on the inside, there are still some wars on the outside ring. As a matter of fact, I don't know who is attacking who, other than Komar is battling Komar . Oh, one major change to the game was how land units were put in. The only unit types in the game are trains, spys, radar, AA, heavy arty, infantry and cavalry units. The number of mill on each unit has been draticly reduced. Cav and inf units can only hold 20 mil. And att/def numbers for them have been reduced. Cav attack at 1.0 and def and 0,7. Infs are just the reverse. (or there abouts).

In the next week or two we will see the bullies slap around the weaker players and try to creat a strong presence on the center land mass. The players that can haul over major numbers of civ's will have the best advantage. At that point we should start to see some bigger, more intense wars.

Finally, below is a copy of the power chart.

Three weeks after start, November 26, 1997

We've had about three weeks of play in the Twisted Mind I game. And finally, it looks like almost all of the free land has been taken. Only a handfull of sectors remain, a good portion of them being mountians. Arrakis continues to be the civilian leader, and thus leads the power chart. His obscenly gross number of planes also has something to do wtih that. However, Ionica and ^^^ are clearly the sector leaders, having grabed more than their fair share of the free land.

Currently, players are trying desperatly to get civilians ferried across the water from start area to the big island. However, fishers only carry 30 civ's, cargo ships 50, and oil derricks carry 300, but take 3-4 updates to get across. So the task is daunting. But in a dozen or so updates, population rates will be rounding into shape.

The tech leaders in this game are all pretty much bunched together. Nobody has come out and stated who they think is the leader and by how much. And Metallica has yet to tell us how many updates untill the nukes start to fall.

There are only two major wars to report as of this date. The smaller one pits Ski versus Xeno. Neither one of these two players got the invitiation to sectors on the big island. And their larger neighbors seem to be leaving them alone. The other war is Krusty against everybody that can get to him. That includes Chaos, Horgoth, Furrym, and Park Place. Krusty is being backed (both financially and geographicly) by his ally Escher. So far there have been a lot of border sectors exchanged but no real incursions or major losses (that I can see).

Finally, somebody suggested that trade ships be put back in for this game. They of course, were joking. Had they been serious, several players would have slipped into his bedroom at night and slowly killed him. Even more tounge in cheek was the envisionment of the big island filled with big_cities. We are currently holding a contest to determine if there has ever been a stupider idea in Empire.

Five weeks after start, December 11, 1997

Empire, Empire, Empire. Remember when men were men and yadda yadda yadda...

Well, today I present the most recent update of everybodies favorite Empire soap opera - As the Twisted Mind Turns. This week finds us at the Dom Delouise Medical Facility for the Dieting Impared. A sobing Ionica sits around the reception area (and I mean AROUND) while former aquaintance Arrakis gently explains to him

Ar: "You're too fat. How do you expect any woman to ever want some one as fat as you?"
Io: "boo hoo. boo hoo. By the way, is that a tuna casarol with stewed beats in your backpack?"
Ar: "Bugger off, butterball. I'm going to show you some tough love."

And with that, the mighty Arrakis army, air force, and navy took 5 sectors from the bloated, yet disgusting Ionica. At that point, our rotund star warned Arrakis of the consequences

Io: "You be nice to me, or I will sit on you. And I won't take a shower."
Ar: "Ummmm, ewwww, okay."

After that, the same old tired script was played out with Mongle Horde and Ionica and then with McTavish and Ionica. In one particularly tear jerking scene, McTavish says "Stop puttin yer han up in me kil, ya sicko.". When all was said and done, Arrakis re-wrote the script and invaded McTavish. Arrakis agent, Ida Know, was qouted as saying "We figure if we get rid of all the other actors in this show, we will have more security."

And what kind of self respecting soap opera only has one story line these days. In the back room of a seedy little pool hall bar down by the wharf, Chaos, Horgoth, Furrym, and Park Place, have tied poor little Krusty to one of the snooker tables and have been taking turns having their way with her. Krusty, in an effort to improve ratings for the show and hopefully keep a full time spot in the cast, has been acting like this has been an enjoyable experience. Off camera and behind the scenes though Krusty admits that some of those scenes would be tough to do if it were not for the KY jelly that Escher keeps providing. But needless to say, sex sell, even in Empire, and the ratings are though the roof.

Of course, all is fair in love and war, but in just plane war, nothing is fair. The kind and belovolant ^^^ allowed his allies, Dead Already and Komar to march units and planes through his land. ^^^ said off camera "I read the script and didn't think anything like this would happen. Next time I get a job on a sit com or some movie. I don't need these young puppies climing all over me day in and day out." Problems erupted when Komar and Dead Already put hardware on interdiction and started trashing their allies sectors. Of course, like sex, violence sells also and there has been a ton a fan mail about this story line.

Finally, the most moving scene of the week was when Xeno was wheeled into the operating room to have a dangerous brain tumor removed by Dr. Ski. In a near award winning performance, Xeno was strapped to the gurney screaming "Don't let that butcher touch me." After the operation Dr. Ski reported that he had accidentally removed half of Xeno's brain. Xeno cried out "Yon bonny rabbit dunna belong to ya."

Seven weeks after start, December 24, 1997

Welcome to another exciting evening of ***As the Twisted Mind Turns***. Tonights sponsor is Visa Beer. It's everywhere you want to be.

(Scenes from last week) Ionica spit at Mongle_Horde. Ionica spit at McTavish. Ionica spit at Arrakis. Krusty, Ski, and Escher spit at beep, Horgoth, Furrym, Xeno, Chaos, and Park Place. And now a word from our sponsor:

BURP

This past week saw a lot of sector borrowing. Arrakis, Metallica, and Ionica borrowed all of McTavish's 400+ sectors in only a couple of updates. They did promise to give them back though right after the game is done. We also saw the final crumbling of Krusty. For what seemed like weeks, Krusty slept on the casting couch to keep a lead roll in the show. Even with half the cast doing their best to make sure Krusty would blow her lines or show up late for shooting, she still hung in there. Finally, the evil Horgoth had his agent slip in some extra pages into the script when nobody was looking. The script called for Horgoth to finally get forts on the other side of vast stretch of plains and violate poor Krusty's personal space. After that the tumbling road show of beep, Furrym, Horgoth, and Park Place didn't see the border signs that said "Escher - 1 sector north". Before the season ending cast party was over, everybody had a piece of Escher.

In what was seen as a clear downsizing effort by the shows producers, Dead Already was laid off to decrease costs and save money. However, cowardly executive for the show did not want to fire Dead face to face. Komar, Mongle Hord, and ^^^ were recruited to do the job. Stunt doubles were called in for Dead's final scene and on live national TV, the three doubles beat the living snot out of Dead Already. When the 2 foot lead pipe that ^^^ was carrying came down on Dead's skull, the collar microphone picked up the sound of the bones being smashed. Drunken crowds in bars went wild at that point.

Finally, there are uncomfirmed reports of 14 year old groupies waiting at the airport hoping to throw thier underwear at Mirkwood who is rumored to be stepping off the plane any moment and out of retirement.

And the powerchart.

Game Summary

After a couple months of fighting, looting, carousing with foriegn women, drinking cheap booze, and generally getting in trouble with several law enforcement agencies and spouses, Twisted Mind I is finally complete. Much to everybodies surprise, Ionica declared himself the winner. Honestly, this person, really a pimply faced 14 year old with a fake ID and an autographed picture of Barry Goldwater dancing the Tarantella with Barney Frank, won this game going away. Well, he made all his hostile neighbors go away. They are still telling the stories in Malx about how they signed off one night and had a couple of hundred sectors. When they awoke in the morning, they had a dry mouth, an ugly woman in bed, and no sectors. Not even a mountain. Ionica just got too big, too fast, and then pushed the tech lead hard. Lots of money, lots of toys, and lots of sheep for neighbors. Hmmmm, sounds like a typical game, don't it. Anyway, Super Bowl Party at Io's house next weekend. Fido is bringing the Alpo dip, Socialist is bringing the whine, and Uesugi is bringing sushi. See you all there.

Awards

John Deer Lawnmower: Well, Ionica of course.

Granite Balls Plaque: Krusty. He stood up well against 2, then 3, then 4 and even 5 players. Of course he lost his shorts in the end. But he went down swinging hard.

Mogan David Cup: Socialist. He just seems to annoy people. Even Tom.

Tom Tedrick Impersonation Award: For the 5th straight game, this award goes to ^^^.

Friendly Fallout Factor Forum: Komar. Relished the idea of nuking his ally.

Mighty Mouse Trophey: Chaos and Ski (shared). Ski actually never got on the big island. But still lived to the end. He was the only person to do that. And if the big island was the United States, Chaos got the equivalent of Camden, New Jersey. Poor sap.
