Imagine, if you will, a start island. 35 sectors. A windswept, barren rock; no gold, no oil, no minerals; mountains cutting across it haphazardly. Welcome to the start of Riverworld.67 countries emerged blinking under the baleful Riverworld sun, took a brief look at the situation, and shrieked in unison at the god Azathoth in frustration and disgust. "Island" is far too complimentary a name for the Riverworld continents: "atoll", "ground zero", or "festering pit of dried bat guano" seem more appropriate.
Some, of particularly fragile constitution, simply expired quietly. Dorsai (!) and Beavis&Butthead already rest in rocky graves.
The survivors, spurred by divine visions of dubious veracity that describe tropical isles abundant with gold, oil, and willing maidens, have begun lashing together driftwood to make strange, leaking craft they they optimistically call "frigates".
And already, there is evidence of bloodthirst in certain irredeemably evil countries:

Money supplies are running dry FAST. And with resources being scarce, we're starting to see the beginnings of war. Revelstone attacked SnakeBite, who had taken over Dorsai's old carcass, but that war seems to be at a standstill. Last night AUJ started sinking it's teeth into Sabaoth-Psi; one of the louder conflicts so far is Leng(Temekula) vs. Ice Barbarians. Ice and Leng apparently both had troops on the same remote island, when Ice did a surprise attack and drove Leng off. There's been a few announcements about it, but so far Leng hasn't countered, and the island remains in Ice Barbarian hands. Numerous other small conflicts have appeared silently in the news, without any editorial comment from the participants.
In the tech race, Langerhans has taken the early lead, with an estimated tech of 18.5 to 21. Four other countries are close behind: Image, Slushy_Popsicle, Lothlorien, and UUCP. But with dwindling financial resources, it remains to be seen how long these countries can keep up the pace. With countries looking for a source of income, not to mention oil and gold, expect to see the period after the next update (tonight) to see more bloodshed.

And Lo! For a feverish minute, the factories did belch forth smoke,
the slaves did toil in the depths to rest lucre from the bones of
mother earth and drill seargeants did quickly force green recruits
into the mold of their brethren. And then it was over, and the slaves
did rest on their picks...And it was evening and it was morning, a
ninth update.
And God did look down on the world he had created, on the flatulent
petty tyrants and priapsic generals, and he did sigh a great sigh,
for it was short of his hopes, little different from dozens of other
worlds he had created in the past. And in his anger, he did turn off
the world for two weeks and went to watch reruns of The Jeffersons...
But then he didst think that the Lord can raise up the mundane to
excel, and let the meek sit even with the members of the Empire Hall
of Fame, and so he deigned to give this "Riverworld" another chance,
pulling it forth from the stack of abandoned projects and restarting
its global lifeforce, emp_tm. And he didst see that the world did
have fresh potential, for did it not contain several of his
minions restored to earth from their positions in the heavens for
one last chance to inclucate others with the lore and elicit great
deeds to elevate others to the majestic halls? And did it not also
contain much of the cream of the current community? It might prove
interesting yet, he thought, stroking his hound Soxie.
Looking more closely at this world, he found that the details were
too insignificant for him to concern himself with: there were
numerous petty wars of little consequence, and the world did divide
itself as usual into those who built tech, led by the avatar of
industry Langerhans, and those who tyranized weak neighbors led by
beep, the recent gainer of the golden garment, and those who
attempted to do both like Mirkwood...but no titans did battle for his
amusement and none offered up sacrifices of classy announcements for
his pleasure...

Jesus will not be coming to Riverworld any time soon. His arrival on earth may interfere with the power supply and connectivity, but these problems will be temporary.
His influence on Riverworld is on the decline, as wars and famines are on the rise. Monies continued to be poured into unproductive sectors of the economy. Economic planners are executed by nervous tyrants, for both overspending and underspending. A summary follows.

Both Krikkit and Parsing lay "claim" to Finland. As Parsing is somewhat larger, his claim seems the stronger. Krikkit has invaded Mouser, Parsing, Finland, and Technetia (now Dharma), but has withdrawn from the larger islands and is developing his economy.
"The country of Parsing is not involved in any wars, per se. Parsing did absorb most of Finland's home island, but due to lack of mil, Finland didn't actually declare war until there were only 5 sectors left of that country. The fine country of Krikkit was attacking Finland from the other side. Some Parsing attacks persuaded Krikkit to leave the island. Again, no all out war here, either. Parsing continues to concentrate on optimizing the country's economy, although not to the extremes that have sent other countries temporarily into the red. A fairly easy peace has been reached with all neighbors, with the exception of Krikkit, at the time of this writing."

The nations of Riverworld have descended into a hellish, Hobbesian nightmare. Cash supplies have nearly vanished. Starving armies are clashing futilely over barren treasuries. The majority of active nations are operating well within the $3K lethal zone, where loss of one's capitol results in instant economic collapse.
Rising out of the surly unwashed masses of Riverworld is the Golden Alliance, consisting of UUCP, Undead, and Krev, and possibly also Parsing and Krikkit. These Renaissance men have quietly set about leading their people out of the Dark Age. UUCP seems to be the designated tech torch-bearer for the alliance and has held the #1 slot for a few updates now. The early tech gods, Langerhans and Lothlorien, have faded back into the pack.
Dharma, Mr. X, and Voittamaton have been driven into bankruptcy by barbarian invasions. Mr. X has gnawed his way back from the brink of destruction, operating for one remarkable update with just $2 to his name, and now appears to be fighting on at least even terms with Reality invaders. Dharma was ko'ed by a violent and unexpected punch from Diznee, and was unable to recover financial solvency before Diznee troops had swarmed over his mainland. Dharma has vowed to resist but his situation is desperate. Voittamaton is apparently leaderless and slowly crumbling under human wave attacks from the tech-primitive country of TigerHaven.
The largest military force is fielded by the ruthless regime of Kaerconan, who has apparently finally subdued the stubborn peasants of Balvania. With 1100 troops and a treasury of $68, wages in the Kaerconan army are estimated to be about 1.5 cents a day. He is being investigated under several unfair labor practice statutes.
The first rumbles of artillery have rippled across Riverworld in the past week, but most observers feel that the introduction of ballistic high explosives is not likely to improve anyone's sense of well-being.

Murk-o-Vision Operas brings you the opening chapter in a classic tale of a young rebel against the brooding power of the Establishment.
Tarn. A small country, its prince cocky, but young and inexperienced. The hero of our story.
Tarn's neighbors - Kaerconan, Mirkwood, and Switzerland. Some of the last of the dying old guard of Empire. Wizened relics of a lost past, when shells did full damage and transport 1's struck fear into the hearts of children.
Tarn's first tentative military adventure was launched this week, an invasion of the corpse of Dharma, who had been mercy-killed by Mirkwood. Mirkwood, not widely known for its tolerance of such uninvited transgressions of common military decency, immediately declared war. At this hour, the Tarn expeditionary force is cut off and pinned down on a bullet-swept beach, under fire from an undisclosed number of elite Mirkwood infantry units in a Dunkirk-like debacle. Two Tarn frigates hover nervously offshore, perhaps hoping to withdraw the force before Elven destroyer pickets can reach them.
Meanwhile, all was not well with the wives and children back home in Tarn. Heavy cruisers filled with howling Kaerconai hove into view and began lobbing shells at baby food factories. Tarn Home Guards, mostly gangs of professors armed with kitchen knives, held off wave after wave of Kaerconai shock troops who swarmed onto the beaches. Latest reports indicate that the Kaerconai invasion has stalled, although the Tarn mainland appears to have taken heavy damage from naval bombardment.
And, even as his people huddle in basements under a shrieking rain of Kaerconai shells, and his marines desperately claw an inch deeper in the bloody sands of Dharma... the young Tarn prince sends a terse missive to the Elven-King of Mirkwood. "Lucky for you that Kaerconan distracted me," he writes. "I'd have kicked your sorry ass."
Such heroism. Such bravery. It brings a tear to the Elven-King's eye even as he calls up reserve heavy artillery units.

Mirkwood has seized the yellow jersey, despite having an economy that is unable to finance a Big Mac.
After much unsubtle intelligence-gathering by Krikkit, it is widely accepted that the tech leader is Langerhans, followed perhaps by UUCP. Several countries are known to have cracked plane technology but, puzzlingly, only Camelot's fearsome SS Hindenberg has been built.

MURK-O-VISION NEWS - DATELINE RIVERWORLD - (AP)
Riverworld is in the grips of large-scale naval warfare, with battleships warily ruling the submarine-infested seas.
In the fiercest naval conflict, Orleanais submarine wolfpacks have paralyzed the combined navies of Hostigos, Rad_Zone, and Amber after Orleanais was attacked. NapaSioux, allied to Orleanais, has launched an attack on Hostigos, and Rad_Zone appears inexplicably dead in the water.
Mirkwood announced a policy of unilateral disarmament in order to conclude a protracted arms race, and a large invasion force began efficiently disarming TigerHaven. Three TigerHaven islands fell in rapid succession under heavy naval bombardment. However, Elven landing forces were startled by fierce and well-prepared TigerHaven defenses, and defending submarines and a battleship slipped through desperate Mirkwood destroyer and attack sub pickets to engage and destroy the ill-deployed Elven Pacific Fleet with the loss of all hands. This leaves Mirkwood forces occupying one of the three captured islands in a highly precarious position, and a pitched battle is being fought.
Metallica, now joined in an unholy co-rulership with the Evil Emperor himself, seems to be pushing MILF back slowly but surely. The Evil One has apparently been frustrated by the Chainsaw supply code, since no massive Metallican starvations have been reported.
The once-proud nation of Tarn, having voiced certain disputed opinions about the parentage of both Kaerconai and Elves, fell swiftly to furious Kaerconan troops, with additional gleeful bone-picking by Mirkwood.
On other fronts in this depressingly violent world, Camelot is locked into a sitkzrieg with Shockwave and beep, UUCP took some time off from tech production to smash Mouser, Reality is plowing grainy under, and there are occasional sorrowful bleating noises as someone's armed fleet stumbles across a struggling island of almost-dead fodder.
Langerhans continues to lead the tech race, with UUCP not far behind. Riverworld is entering the early WWII tech era. The first armored vehicles are now appearing, and aircraft should soon see general use instead of being used as they are now for sporadic dropping of generally unwelcome small parcels.
Mirkwood has now held the #1 slot for a month or two; the dark days of UUCP leadership are mercifully but a faded memory. Ah, how the people of Riverworld rejoice and bask in the warm glow of the Elven-King's radiant smile, not to mention that of their own shattered, burning villages...

The tech leader Langerhans has fallen. A friendly nation, Kaerconan, has taken it upon himself to make Langerhans into a more useful asset.Sympathy for the plight of Langerhans has been overwhelming, especially among tech runners-up Mirkwood, Camelot, and UUCP.
In other news, Mirkwood and the Evil One have announced plans to pave the world. The Evil One (of Metallica) has announced plans to establish trade routes and an informal alliance with Kaer, while Kaer has announced plans to ally with and later backstab Mirkwood.
Wars in other parts of the world are progressing. MILF is slowly losing ground to Metllica. Billy has lost a few sectors to Parsing. Mirkwood has not moved further against Tigerhaven in several days. Undead and beep have split Shockwave (now ceded). beep is also involved in large scale reef construction with Camelot.
Mouser continues to resist the takeover by UUCP and Krikkit from his half dozen mountains. grainy appears to have lost all but his start island to Reality and Krikkit. The Ice Barbarians are cleaning out the mountains in Cowpatch and Qaz. AUJ has made what look like amphibious landings at various locations on the Snakebite mainland.
A multisided battle appears to be raging on the island of LV426. LV426 is being aggressively divided by NapaSioux, Orleanais, and Hostigos. NapaSioux has established a firm beachhead deep within Hostigos. RMS is similarly being divided by Krev, Parsing, Thanatos, and Billy, with Parsing landing on some exposed Billy islands and Undead striking from Thanatos' flank.
Revelstone's invasion of Khazad'ur last week was thrown back into the sea. Krikkit and Revelstone both invaded this weekend, and appear to be staying. With luck, this will develop into another conflict.
Planes have not played an important role yet, though WW2 vintage aircraft may change that soon.

A small, bunny-slippered figure walks through a foggy graveyard. It is a small but distinguished graveyard of the dead countries that have attempted to invade Mirkwood.
The Elven-King pauses briefly at each headstone. With deep reverence he spits on each grave and stamps on the flowers.
Presently he comes to a fresh grave. "SWITZERLAND -- RIVERWORLD 1993-1994, R.I.P." says the stone.
A small tear runs down his cheek as sorrow and pity overcomes him. "Pity I don't have a shovel, I'd dig you up and rip your throat out again, you treacherous bastard," he murmurs...

In a premeditated and well-orchestrated backstab, Switzerland broke its alliance with tech and power leader Mirkwood and landed a large armored force on the undefended Mirkwood mainland. As a vicious Swiss blitzkrieg rampaged unimpeded across the vulnerable Elven countryside, the Elven-King had all grade school history textbooks recalled and revised -- "Switzerland was never our ally. Switzerland is scum. Switzerland has always been scum. Do not accept rides from strange Swiss men driving armored vehicles; instead, poke out their eyes with barbed sticks." A desperate Elven counterattack then followed, described as "innovative", "unconventional", and "deeply satisfying" by the Elven media but prompting shrill and unprintable anti-Ruschak curses from the Swiss, and the Swiss military rapidly disintegrated and ceased to exist as a fighting force.
Ice Barbarians and Nirvana promptly took advantage of the obviously exposed Swiss position. The Switzerland mainland is now under hostile occupation. Switzerland is not expected to survive the week. No one in this press office is mourning his death.
Camelot continues to withstand determined assaults from the powerful beep war machine. Naval losses in Camelot/beep waters have been shocking; the amount of sunken steel threatens to disrupt fragile marine ecosystems. In other wars, Metallica has been staggered by an apparently successful combined AUJ/Waffen blitzkrieg, UUCP has seized a Reality colony at the outset of a possibly major war, and heavy skirmishing between Kaerconan and BigSur has been reported.
Diplomatic manuevering is reaching a fever pitch. The surviving countries in Riverworld are playing fiercely and playing to win. The major players have begun to size each other up and jockey for position. Smaller countries, conscious of their precarious position as pawns in a rapidly expanding power struggle, are negotiating tirelessly. The major alliances seem to be a UUCP/Undead axis and a AUJ/BigSur/Parsing coalition.
And deep in the now-fortified forests of Mirkwood, there is heard the whine of strange new aircraft engines and rumor of a mysterious project called "Manhattan"...

Take twelve pit bulls. Starve them for a week. Poke them with barbed sticks. Then lock them in a shed together, and toss in a scrawny chicken or two.
Welcome to Riverworld, where the feathers have settled from the fodder and the pit bulls are now eyeing each other.
The brutal Camelot/beep war continues. Observers estimate that ~200 ships have been lost in this titanic naval war, as Camelot tenaciously holds its ground against the beep war machine. beep has resorted to using fleets of 10+ battleships to cover his naval operations against undaunted Camelot suicide units. Mirkwood continues to extend naval and air cover over Camelot in support of a growing covert military aid operation.
A cheeky new government assumed control of Reality and immediately made diplomatic overtures to its neighbors in the form of unauthorized overflights and veiled threats. Several neighbors returned these sentiments in spades. Reality now finds itself under attack from Waffen, Gnur, UUCP, and Mirkwood. The new Reality president was quoted as saying "Was it something I said?"
The scurrilous rabble-rousing propaganda of Amber, who attempted to undermine the wise and benevolent dictatorship of Mirkwood and foment a general insurrection against innocent Elves, has failed. Demonstrating long-haired Amber students surrounded Mirkwood overseas embassies and ineffectually lobbed various vegetables, including the aged Dharman president-in-exile, splattering the elegant buildings with unsightly debris. Now, however, large detachments of National Guard troops from BigSur, Parsing, and Undead have moved to seize Amber radio towers and silence him for good.
The devious web of Riverworld alliances has gotten even more entangled. The prime alliance is UUCP/Undead/Parsing/Krikkit/Krev, with ties to BigSur/AUJ and beep. Their principal competition comes from a Kaerconan/Waffen/Gnur/Mirkwood/ Camelot alliance. The uncommitted Ice_Barbarians/Nirvana axis is courted by diplomats of both sides. Skirmishes have broken out between major powers in these alliances which may lead to general world war in the next few updates.
The Elven-King has worn the yellow jersey for nearly six months and it needs a wash. The wizened techno-elves of deepest Mirkwood continue to churn out new and wondrous toys of mass destruction, civilian pacification, and consumer convenience. Atop the mountain island retreat where Mr. Frog meditates upon the meaning of Empire, the Armageddon Clock has been advanced to fifteen minutes til midnight.
And near a remote Elven desert site called Trinity, a local newspaper has reported a mysterious flash as bright as a second sun...

Murk-o-Vision is on extended European vacation. Here are recent annos from Riverworld instead. Riverworld is entering Vietnam-era tech (at least, *I* am; I dunno about the rest of these barbarian-countries lagging behind me). A Kaerconan/Waffen/Mirkwood/Gnur/Camelot alliance is facing off with pretty much the rest of the world.
The top countries are almost all engaged in fierce fighting. #1 Mirkwood is island-hopping marines towards #4 UUCP in heavy naval and amphibious warfare, with several carriers involved; tiny Camelot continues a remarkable defensive battle to hold off #2 beep; #7 Waffen, after invading AUJ, has been heavily counterattacked by #5 Parsing; and #6 Kaerconan is in the process of steadily subjugating BigSur.

This is Murk-o-Vision News, reporting live from the shell-pocked fallout shelters of Riverworld. Our intrepid reporters have braved shrieking missiles, tactical nuclear weapons, and peeping, doe-eyed Undead children to bring this report to you. You damn well better appreciate it.
Riverworld, approaching endgame, has been engulfed by an expanding world war. The Axis Kaerconan/Mirkwood/Waffen plan for benevolent world pacification involved the near-simultaneous engagement of Big Sur by Kaerconan, AUJ by Waffen, and UUCP by Mirkwood. Like all such plans of naive but well-meaning peacemakers, this one promptly went straight to hell. Evilly, Parsing stepped in and counterattacked Waffen; Undead turned coat on the crumbling Allied alliance and counter-counterattacked Parsing; and UUCP, taking advantage of a mysterious period of inactivity by the Mirkwood government, counter-counter-counterattacked Undead.
All of these wars, except the slow grinding of BigSur under Kaerconan artillery, seem to be at a relative standstill. However, in today's news, Mirkwood, mysteriously tanned and perky, has just re-appeared after a two week absence and announced a major redevelopment plan for northern UUCP. Much revelry is expected, though not, perhaps, in UUCP.
The amazing beep-Camelot war still continues and 70-sector Camelot refuses to give an inch to the mighty beep military machine. Mirkwood, continuing a long tradition of support to the brave but downtrodden, has augmented its humanitarian aid program for Camelot with high-technology weaponry. The beep navy has been driven off of the Camelot coast in a flurry of sub-launched Tomahawk missiles, with the loss of all surface ships visible to Elven forward spotters. beep bureaucrats, noted for their misguided optimism, gushed exultantly about their favorable new naval deltas.
Along with beep, the remaining non-aligned countries still wield significant power. Ice Barbarians is very high on the chart but fairly inactive. Krikkit, co-ruled by two active players, is slowly and greedily gobbling up its smaller neighbors.
Mirkwood apparently holds the tech lead by a significant margin. UUCP is almost undoubtedly second. Lead tech is late Vietnam era; anti-ship missiles are swinging the balance of power into the air and undersea. At Cape Canaveral in Mirkwood, a small dog has been launched into suborbit and recovered in a countable number of pieces. This resounding technological success led the Elven-King and his secret billionaire partner to announce the imminent world-spanning deployment of thousands of communications satellites, ushering in the Murk-o-Vision Information Age. All Murk-o-Vision subscribers will receive stunning high-resolution images of their homes from space and two free long-distance calls. All non-subscribers will receive frequent subscription reminders on colorful MIRV'ed delivery devices.

The citizenry of the UUCP Northern Province, a mongrel-breed of UUCP / Uppland / Reality descent, were treated to a rare display last night. Shortly after midnight, the sound of sonic booms shook them from their houses; streaks of flame raced across the coastal lowlands, and the flash of snapshots by Elven Aerial Photography units lit the beaches.
Rising up to meet the shrieking Elven jet fighter 3 and 4s were the local UUCP Air Guard. Donned with leather jackets and hats, these brave pilots took to their Sopwith's and Mustangs, and took to the air. Despite overwhelming odds against them, they engaged the Elven intruders, earning high marks for courage in the face of adversity. And even doing a reasonably good job of fighting:

The pilot of Sopwith #248, after parachuting into a bombed-out UUCP fort, was greated by the local citizenry as a hero.
As the air battles over the UUCP coast raged on, and Mirkwood bombers wreaked HAVOC on the UUCP countryside below, naval battles were being silently raged under the waters off the UUCP coastline. Fleets of nuclear attack subs engaged each other in volleys of torpedoes, while Mirkwood carrier-based naval-choppers skimmed the surface, looking for signs of motion. A fleet of Mirkwood surface ships braved the hostile seas, lead by several BB4s, a light carrier, a couple of landing ships, and assorted escort vessels. UUCP forts pounded the approaching fleets; Mirkwood BB's responded by turning the coastal sectors into rubble. When the gunfire stopped, the UUCP coastline was burning; a Mirkwood landing ship lay smoking, turned on its side in a Mirkwood harbor, and the Mirkwood carrier was slowly sliding beneath the waves out in the no-man's-land; and the rest of the Mirkwood fleet was forced to seek shelter out of gunrange of the forts.
As more Elven jet-med-bombers winged their way towards the offending forts, elements of the elite UUCP 1st Fighter Squadron were redeploying to the area from the Undead front. The crack UUCP jet-fighter pilots were able to stand toe-to-toe with the Elven bombers for a while, but when waves of Mirkwood jf4's appeared, the bombers were able to disengage and shoot their wad into the targeted fort.
As the night wore on, and dawn approached, a pack of UUCP nuc-attack-sub-1s set out to try and engage the retreating Mirk fleet. One sub was able to quickly pass right under 2 Mirkwood DD2s, sweeping around the northern tip of a UUCP islet; then, taking up range at the far-end of the DD2's dcharge range, let out a barrage of torpedoes, sinking one DD and crippling the other. A Mirk sub responded the scene, launcing a couple of torpedoes from the opposite coast of the islet; it is presumed that that Elven sub commander ha found an underwater cave to shoot the torp's through, as we all know that subs can't go thru land...the Elven sub was able to lock onto the UUCP sub on the far coast, and toasted it. But, while he was busy sinking the UUCP sub, another sub from the UUCP pack nav'ed in from behind, and put 2 torpedoes into his butt. The mixture of oil and pink bunny-slippers rising to the surface was a sight to behold.
Now, the next morning, the air over the UUCP region is quiet again; plumes of smoke rise from an assortment of burning sectors, ships, and downed planes, including Mirkwood jf4 #1912, who was shot down by UUCP jf1 #1417. The exact number of UUCP planes downed in the night was, unforunately, not available. The night's bombing raid had knocked out electricity in the region, and military accountants were being forced to asses the damage on scratch paper.
One can only wonder what the night will bring tonight...

Far away, in the Mirkwood trade-shipping lanes, a lone renegade Nirvana nuclear-attack-sub made its way past the sub-nets, and into the shipping channel. Peering thru the periscope, the 1st Lt. on watch nearly creamed his pants as he saw the sight before him; 20 Mirkwood trade ships, lined up like pins in a bowling ally. Screaming for the torpedo crews, he locked in one on after another; in a mad rush, they sent a reported *17* Mirkwood trade ships to the bottom. Elven naval commanders in the area, in charge of ASW protection, were unavailable for comment. And a later reprisal raid against Nirvana by the Elven Air Force apparently had little impact.
Reports are that the Elven-King himself was also unavailable
for comment; his top advisors being unable to pull him away
from his latest high-tech toy, a prototype-aerial-camera set.
More news as UUCP reporters manage to escape from the front.

Riverworld is worth an extra post this week.
Too often in Empire, the endgame fizzles out -- one or two large countries, too exhausted to fight. Not Riverworld. All hell is breaking loose. The major countries are toe to toe, and may continue at this intensity for a good part of the summer.
And try to appreciate the magnitude of this -- these are 300+ sector countries in a game that has been going since November. These countries are fine-tuned war machines with eight months of work put into them. I'll be damned if someone's taking Mirkwood out at this point, and everyone is just as doggedly determined, even the little countries. Take, for instance, Camelot, who has now withstood a war
with beep for four months or more.
Riverworld is a low-resources, high-difficulty slow game; lots of water, forcing us to learn and use amphibious warfare. This is a Chainsaw nightmare of small islands; if you want to take over your neighbor, you coordinate massive naval and air operations, take a piddly little island, and then gear up to do it all over again four days later. Imagine the U.S. Marines, island-hopping across the Pacific, except with the Japanese using Exocets, nuclear attack submarines, and tac nukes against the Marines' thin-hulled landing craft: that's Riverworld.
The two factions in the current Riverworld world war are Mirkwood / Kaerconan / Waffen / Undead / Gnur / MILF / Camelot vs. Parsing / UUCP / beep / AUJ / BigSur / Nirvana / Krev. The hot wars:
#1 Mirkwood vs. #4 UUCP -- classic island-hopping warfare. Elven Marines, helicopters, and carriers vs. UUCP tac nukes, attack subs, and interlocking fortress fire. Mirkwood is resorting to heavy-handed fighter-bomber suppression of coastal radars and fortresses, along with extensive carrier- and land-based ASW activity, to clear the way for amphibious assaults. fighting: four sectors gained, at the cost of three battleships, a carrier, and two LST's on the sea floor, slightly glowing...

#5 beep vs. Camelot and #1 Mirkwood -- beep turned to nuclear weapons this update, as Mirkwood continues to engage his surface navy at long range with cruise missiles, holding his fleets off Camelot's coast and frustrating his assault forces...
#6 Kaerconan vs. BigSur -- the Kaerconai may be stalled on stubborn BigSur. Lots of fighting, horrific artillery barrages, no progress...
Nirvana vs. #1 Mirkwood -- gack. Tiny Nirvana enters the conflict and Nirvana attack submarines ambush four unprotected convoys of Mirkwood trade ships en route to Kaerconan. 15 ships are lost with all hands on "Bloody Wednesday". Mirkwood retaliates with Desert Storm style airstrikes on Nirvana airfields and warehouses, with lots of noise but little lasting effect. Nirvana burns effigies of the "Great Satan Elven-King" in front of the embassy and shames the mighty world power with hilarious announcements...
And the independents watch and wait; #2 Ice Barbarians is well-armed but still neutral, and #8 Krikkit is biding his time by overrunning small Tallistan. The world war is so finely balanced, the entry of either could be pivotal.

At home in Mirkwood, the children laugh and point at their glowing Murk-o-Vision screens. They clap as Elven smart weapons dive down chimneys of baby-milk factories. They squeal as "accidental" cruise missile shots collapse the expensive resort hotels frequented by smartass war correspondents. It's sweeps week for Murk-o-Vision and the Elven-King is pulling out all the stops.
Then, the screen shifts to the explosive launch of IRBM's from mobile launchers, flashing towards the remains of UUCP airfields and warehouses. The children dance in anticipation. They love this part.

The Mirkwood/UUCP BTU-blender had a comparatively slow night last night. UUCP residents camped on the beaches of Uppland, toasting marshmallows and awaiting the sonic boom announcing the arrival of the Mirkwood guests. An occasional UUCP f1 dipped down to toss cans of hair spray at the bonfires, and UUCP asw-choppers skipped over the whitecaps offshore chasing the shadows of Mirkwood missile subs, but overall the night was quiet. The hours passed, the bonfires slowly faded, and the beach-campers leaned back in their chaise-lounges and drifted off to the chatter of
circling seagulls.

The pre-dawn quiet was shattered by the roar of incoming missiles. A tri-fecta of Mirkwood missiles arched their way across the horizon, and again disappeared behind the mountains to the east. Moments later, a bright flash and earthshaking boom came from the eastern reaches of Uppland; a row of fiery mushroom clouds rose from behind the mountains.
Salvage crews arriving on the scene in the morning found the runways of the airfields melted into something resembling the LaBrea tar pits; but the most curious sight was at the UUCP warehouse that are a direct hit: food stores there had been predominantly corn. There was absolutely no sign of the warehouse anymore; but several inches of white, fluffy popcorn covered the area...and several well-done horses were found in the governor's quarters...

As the salvage crews cleared the popcorn, UUCP engineers began the process of building a new airfield nearby...

Weary, embittered Elven Marines slog through the jungles of Uppland, bitten by flies and stumbling over the charred radioactive remains of twenty UUCP divisions, as the Riverworld world war intensifies.
UUCP seems to be executing a baldly Machiavellian strategy, sacrificing islands to advancing Mirkwood marines on one front while attacking and gaining ground from Undead on another. Thus far, UUCP has actually gained overall despite taking heavy losses on the front with Mirkwood. UUCP offensive forces have so far avoided scrapping with technologically superior Mirkwood units. It remains to be seen how effective this strategy will be, given anticipated civil resistance from the captured Undead populace. But with beep now apparently swinging into position to intercept the Mirkwood thrust and cover UUCP's retreat, some observers believe that UUCP may have stumbled upon an admirably underhanded way to weather the nuclear storm and entangle yet another major country on the ground in the expanding Riverworld world war...

- UPPLAND FALLS, UUCP OCCUPATION FORCES DESTROYED -
Covered by numbing airstrikes, including the unrestrained use of sub-launched airburst tactical nuclear weapons, Elven amphibious units have engaged UUCP units in the first serious land battle between the two powers.
Landing ships evaded Tomahawk-laden UUCP ballistic missile submarines and disgorged engineers and marines onto the Uppland west coast early this morning, establishing a tiny but secure beachhead. Eight armored divisions in two battle groups then expanded from the bridgehead in a classic pincers movement, driving dazed and broken UUCP units into unfavorable ground where they were bombed, strafed, and mercilessly exterminated.
Twenty UUCP units are reported KIA and Elven security forces now hold Uppland. Elven casualties on the ground were minimal, though several aircraft were lost to beep-made SAM's launching from concealed jungle sites.
beep is providing air cover over the disintegrating UUCP northern defense lines. There is a bridge under construction that would link the beep mainland to the next targeted UUCP island; interdiction of this nascent Ho Chi Minh trail, at the edge of Elven bomber range, has so far been unsuccessful.

An eerie silence hangs over the northern regions of UUCP today. Unconfirmed reports have been spreading of the carnage being wrought by Elven terrorists in the state of Uppland, and on the various islands offshore. Unconfirmed, because official
sources insist that no living creature has actually been heard from in those areas for some time.
But the network of ham radio operators, based mainly in the dense, forested regions of grainy, claim to have made contact with UUCP guerillas operating in the mountains of Uppland. Radio reports there indicate that 8 Elven armored units were scattered about the area, tracking down bands of UUCP cav that remained in Uppland after the main forces had staged their evacuation. One report also came in from the rubble of a UUCP fortress near the west coast; they reported some Mirkwood ships still hanging offshore. Another report came in from the docks of the main port in Uppland; this one said that the entire area had been laid to waste by the Elven bombers, and that occupation forces in general were rather thin in that area.
Although unconfirmed by official UUCP news sources, these reports drifting in were enough to send panicked UUCP civilians into a frenzy. Commendeering any ships they could find, they began a full-scale evacuation to the south.
Finding the job of carrying household goods and food stores too cumbersome, many bands of refugees helped themselves to assorted armored veichles that were found scattered about the UUCP countryside. And finding sea travel to be faster than land travel, many of them loaded their veichles and families onto landing ships, and fled.
When some of the convoys of refugees had their ships fired upon by Mirkwood missile subs operating way to the south, another panic ensued - the refugees scattered, making for the nearest lands they could find, so they could escape the barrage of Mirkwood missiles that was decimating their convoy. And, in what has come to be known as "Operation Goldilocks", the different groups came upon three different islands...
The first group came upon a small, stringy islet in the middle of the ocean, south of UUCP. Finding the island nearly completely undefended, they came ashore in the night and overpowered the startled Undead troops there. This island was cold, as far as any real action was concerned.
The second group came upon the former nation of Lothlorien, which was under occupation by Undead. Undead, his forces stretched thin due to his assault on Parsing, had minimal forces to hold down Lothlorien. The UUCP refugees, having heard of the atrocities committed by Undead against the peoples of Parsing, were quick to come to the aid of the occupied Lothlorien civilians here. The Undead troops, caught completely with their pants down, were quickly routed. Planes from the UUCP civil air patrol joined the effort, and in relatively no time, the whole of
Lothlorien had been liberated. This island was "warm" wrt to action.
The third group stumbled upon the Undead mainland. Finding it well-armed and to their liking (!) they churned their way past the fire of 4 forts and landed on a cornfield on the north coast. Quickly setting up a dock to unload their families, they secured the farms in the area and began the job of reconning for Undead units. Finding several, messages were sent back to the ham radio networks back in UUCP, where they were also picked up by the UUCP military commander in the area. He then dispatched a flurry of tactical nukes to where the Undead units had been sighted, ordered bombers to level the island, and battleships in to keep any stragglers from escaping. But the action here was to be hot. Undead soldiers, hearing of their comrades in Lothlorien being routed, took to the offensive against the intruding refugees. Many UUCP veichles were damaged, which, in turn, prompted
the army to send in the heavy armor to rout the Undead forces. Backed by close-in bomber and chopper air support, they wreaked havoc on the Undead mainland, killing enemy mil by the thousands. Despite counterattacks by Undead, the beachhead established by the refugees was not only secured, but expanded upon. The action overall was deemed "very hot"; or, to the UUCP armor units, "just right"...

Wound into a frenzy by the success of the attack on the Undead mainland, the UUCP air force joined the fun in full force. Several more tactical nukes were lobbed into another Undead island in the area, one turning the main airport there into melted mush. F-111's pockmarcked the island with craters, bombing anything that moved. Tactical missiles, shipped into the occupied areas of the Undead mainland, targeted Undead ASW ships in the area. And UUCP nuc-attack subs scourged the remnents of the Undead submarine fleets.

After marching thru the warehouse on the Undead mainland, a UUCP armor commander stopped to survey the Undead flag that waved, somewhat tattered, from the front of the building. Carefully aiming the .50 cal machine gun on the turret, he blew away the part of the flag with the "Un" on it, Just in case there was any doubt among the local (occupied) populace about what had happened...

Fortress UUCP. Fifty sectors of hell and enlistment camps. 5000 military, 20 fortified land units, air cover from both beep and UUCP. Also known in Mirkwood as "Omaha Beach," or just plain "ground zero"...
Both beep and UUCP are reeling from a colossal Mirkwood amphibious attack against heavily fortified northern UUCP, which seized 40-50 UUCP sectors, downed air cover over continent-wide areas, sterilized the oceans clear of surface ships, and killed an estimated 5000 UUCP militia and 20 units. Only two non-mountain sectors remain of Fortress UUCP, spared only by an acute shortage of BTUs in the Elven capital. Mirkwood defied UUCP antiship missiles and employed carrier-based helicopter gunships and transport choppers to support waves of armor which landed on the helpless UUCP coast.
This may be the last major engagement of Riverworld. Referees have now intervened to declare a 15th round TKO, to protect the dazed, thrashing hulks that were beep and UUCP. As of a few hours ago, Mirkwood has declared a solo victory.
There is not expected to be serious opposition to the Mirkwood win declaration, despite some speculation about various coalition-win scenarios. The Axis is not strong enough to declare a clean coalition victory, given the high ranks of Alliance nations Parsing, UUCP, and beep, but Mirkwood's tech and power lead should be sufficient to carry the solo declaration. Mirkwood can reach any country in the world with spysats and tactical nuclear warheads.
Kaerconan is apparently leaderless and both BigSur and Krikkit are scavenging sectors from his rotting corpse. The Parsing/Waffen war is still blazing, but essentially stalemated. There is little other action, as the game winds down.
If there is no opposition to the Mirkwood declaration, Riverworld, a nine-month marathon slow game, will soon come to an end. Guy Smiley, the famous toastmaster of the Suboceanan Arts & War Academy, has been spotted by paparazzi, and the Riverworld Awards Ceremony is probably imminent.

Riverworld, an eight month Chainsaw 3.3 slow game, has come to an end. Mirkwood was declared solo victor, shortly before the fitting demise of the Riverworld filesystem due to a lightning strike.
At the end, the long, brutal Riverworld world war seemed essentially stalemated on all fronts except Mirkwood's. The Mirkwood war machine was steadily grinding through UUCP, and starting to spread its wings and gnaw on beep and BigSur by the end, exploiting a 50-100 tech point advantage that provided unopposed satellite coverage and long-range nuke-tipped missiles launched from nearly invisible ballistic missile submarines. The only other significant progress was being made by Krikkit, who was seizing land rapidly from an inactive Kaerconan; but Krikkit had come within range of Mirkwood missile submarines and was under spysats by the end. There was an effort to muster a worldwide jihad against the Elves, but these eleventh-hour diplomatic efforts collapsed when a deal was cut with Parsing that provided free bunny slippers in perpetuity for Parsing citizens at all Mirkwood Toys 'R' Us outlets.
Mirkwood benefited from solid support by several long-term allies. Waffen played hard and was holding off the strong challenge from Parsing effectively; Gnur and Camelot covered the Elven eastern approaches and prevented beep from carrying out any harassing actions; and for much of the game, Kaerconan protected the western approaches from harassment by BigSur and AUJ. This Axis intended to declare a coalition win, but the collapse of the Kaerconai government, the rise of Krikkit, and the dogged efforts of Parsing to stay in a high slot on the power chart discouraged it in the end.
Other players have saved full announcement files, including the flurry of the Awards Ceremony, and I hope they post some of them.
It was a great game, one of the best in my opinion. Congratulations and many thanks to Drake for running it. Riverworld demonstrated that large-scale amphibious warfare is possible in Chainsaw, leading to well-balanced conflicts and very few outright blitz overruns. I'd recommend that more deities should consider Riverworld-like setups of many small, resource-poor islands and lots of water.
For what it's worth, this will be Mirkwood's last appearance in Empire. The real world has finally caught up to me; it's soon to be Herr Doctor Professor Elven-King, rather than mild-mannered lowly grad student/postdoc with a bizarre alternate identity.
Thanks to everyone; particularly Mirkwood's ancient foes and friends: the MIT contingent of Suboceana, Fodderland, Aquitaine; Redline ("If you can read "Made in Redline" on the warhead, it's too late"); Dorsai, probably the best all-around player I've ever faced; Revelstone, the most ruthless and skilled warrior I ever fought against; Resvon, an elf-hating, beer-swilling son of a bitch that I never did manage to beat in a fair fight -- he pulled out of Riverworld, dammit; Lersing and Temekula, the evil twins of Empire; Mr. Frog and The_Scum, for writing this addictive monstrous game; Kaerconan, Evil_Empire, Afrika_Korps, Dreamlands, Ghostlands, and so on. And a particular nod to Zenith, the deity of 1989 Harvard, where Mirkwood made its first appearance; we (Tom Jones and I, the original Mirkwood) learned enough from Zenith as almost-newbies in that game to start our reputation and make it fun to keep Mirkwood going through more games. Support those newbies and clue them in, folks; that's what keeps the game alive...

Riverworld has come to a close. Less than 24 hours after a solo
declaration of victory by Mirkwood, a lightning storm struck central
PA, and severely damaged the filesystem the game was running on. The
win was to be official in 2 hours. The last deity power report showed
Mirkwood at 666 sectors, and nearly twice the "power" of the second
place country, Waffen I believe. Ice Barbarians, Krikkit, Kaerconan,
UUCP, and beep were all large 300-400 sector countries. There were
several other survivors, especially Camelot who (at 70 sectors) fought
massive naval, air, and ground battles with beep since last winter.
Any countries with records of the awards announcements, and the
most current power reports, please post them. The log files here have
been atomized.
Blue coloring on countries in the power chart indicates the winners of the game.

(The UUCP West Coast)
Ah, the West Coast in springtime.
Off shore, sleek Elven nuc attack subs leap playfully into the air,
crashing down in sprays of water, splashing the sinking hulks of UUCP
landing craft. A column of smoke rises from UUCP island harbors in the
distance as Mirkwood bombers drop loads of environmentally friendly
fire-retardant napalm. A sign says "No Smoking. Fire Danger is: HIGH".
The Elven-King sings an apocalyptic tune under his breath, adjusts his
rainbow-black Oakleys ("Thermonuclear Protection") and waves "Repent,
for the End of the World is Nigh" sign menacingly as he staggers down
the Malibu beachfront looking for fallout shelters...

I thought I'd mention a few bugs that I've seen but may not
be generally known, and haven't been fixed.
1) sams aboard subs (and probably ships as well) on air patrol
launch but don't hit planes. Experiment if you wish, but I've
had bad luck with them.
2) Sometimes a sector has 0 civs, but the oldowner is still not
reset. I don't know why. The oldowner will get reset at the
next update. If you need it sooner, just telex. There aren't
any of these right now.
3) ASW planes have been flying missions beyond their range, and
at negative mobility. Again, I don't know why, they don't
*usually* do this, but in a few cases they have. The code
looks straightforward..

beep's already having enough trouble with the "torp"
command, as the long arm of Elven law reaches towards
his benighted shores. When it comes time for the
"attack" command, it'll be too late for him }:)

(bpi) despite the widespread protests by animal rights groups
after the death throes of Mirkwood attack subs trapped in the
nets of beep fishing trawlers was broadcast on national
television, the citizen leader scoffed at the idea that new
harvesting equipment and procedures be mandated. "your cat
doesn't care if his 'Tuna Delight' is certified 100% sub free",
he reportedly told the opposition leader in a closed door
session of the citizens' forum.
Some awards were apparently given, but the game server suffered a lightning strike and it was all lost.
