Empire is now 30 years old. It stands as being the oldest continuously played Internet (and net predecessors) based computer game. As players, we tend to focus on the here and now. Yet, there is a large amount of history regarding this game we play and love. Recovering that history can be a time consumptive task. The longer it is before the work is done to recover the history of Empire, the more will be lost in the mists of time. How valuable is the information? The potential exists for it to be extremely so, though a significant portion of the value of it will be subjective, and not easily evaluated. Regardless, not having the history would be a great loss.
- H2/W2: History of old games (also in website).
Find histories for and create history pages for every Empire game that can be recovered (especially via groups.google.com).
Assigned to: Geoff Cashman
Status: 20 games complete as of mid-July, 2003. Approximately 60-70 remain. 31 games complete as of early February, 2004. Feb. 26, '04: 40 games complete (plus two partials). 93 remain according to this. 30% complete.
- H3: Get history from Dave Pare, Peter Langston, et. al.
Assigned to: Geoff Cashman
Status: They have been contacted, but more direct questions to them, perhaps in an interview style, needs to be done to extract appropriate information from them.
July 30, 2003: Regained contact with Ken Stevens. I've added his comments to the history section of the main website.
- H4: Empire timeline.
The timeline displayed on the history page of the Empire website would show just the highlights. The more in-depth timeline intended with this task would have everything imaginable:
- Code release dates (done for Wolfpack)
- Game begins (brought up to date with H2, continues)
- Game ends (brought up to date with H2, continues)
- Empire news postings
- Significant retirements
- Project establishments
- Project head changes (done for Wolfpack)
- New clients (done for WinACE only so far)
- New website addresses
Assigned to: Geoff Cashman
Status: An early version of this can be seen on the history page of the Empire website. Feb 26, '04: real version now available.
- H5: Ken McDonald may have old materials. Acquire.
Assigned to: Geoff Cashman
Status: Not started
- H6: Mark Ballinger may have old materials. Acquire.
Assigned to: Geoff Cashman
Status: July 26, 2003: Geoff received CD from Mark. The CD is a copy of the entire empire.idlpaper.com (previous home for Wolfpack Empire) drive, containing 534mb of data. Initial scans of material found three previously lost editions of Empire News, and the long lost Deity Handbook.
- H7: CD of archived Empire materials.
A massive amount of raw data has been collected regarding Empire. This pile of data exists on Geoff Cashman's computers. Create a CD that contains all of the archived data and make it available to anyone who wants a copy (for a small fee to cover production and shipping, but not profit unless the profit can be directed at whatever costs Empire incurs, such as website fees).
Assigned to: Geoff Cashman
Status: Not started
- H1: Previous editions of Empire News (also in website). (done)
Find all previous editions of the Empire News and create previous edition pages for them on the Wolfpack Empire website.
Assigned to: Geoff Cashman, Markus Armbruster
Status: Completed July 26th, 2003. To the best of our knowledge, all previous editions of Empire News are on the website on the "previous news" page. Total of 42 previous editions.
